Mets Fall to Benintendi, Nationals
|
The Washington Nationals defeated the New York Mets, 7-2, at Nationals Park. Washington left fielder Andrew Benintendi was named player of the game for his superb performance. He went 3 for 3 with a home run, 2 singles, and was hit by a pitch, while scoring 2 times and driving in 3. Corey Kluber got the win, improving to 11-5. He worked 8 innings, giving up 2 runs on 7 hits, while striking out 10 and walking 0. The first-place Nationals, at 63-44, now lead their division by 2½ games.
Benintendi had a game-changing single in the bottom of the eighth. On a 1-1 fastball from Nick Wittgren, he banged a run-scoring single to left-center, giving the Nationals a 3-2 lead. It was the 131st hit of the year for Benintendi.
"We'll savor this win," Benintendi told the Washington Observer, "then get ready for the next game."
