Big Day for Shaw as Mets Down Pirates, 9-5
|
Benefiting from an exceptional performance from Travis Shaw, the New York Mets defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates, 9-5. Shaw went 4 for 5 with a home run, a double, and 2 singles. He scored 3 times and drove in 4 for the Mets. Luis Severino earned the win for New York. He lasted 6 innings, allowing 3 earned runs on 8 hits, while striking out 3. With the win, he raised his record to 9-6. The win boosts the Mets to 48-57. The loss puts the Pirates at 40-64.
New York used the timely hitting of John Hicks to seize the win. The first baseman stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the fourth inning to put the Mets on top, 3-2. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
"We came out aggressive," said Mets manager Larry Linke. "We came out swinging the bats."
