Cubs Nose Past St. Louis, 4-3
|
The St. Louis Cardinals got a sterling performance from pitcher Mike Soroka, but the Chicago Cubs still prevailed, 4-3. Soroka threw 7.0 innings of 4-hit ball. Chicago reliever Nate Pearson picked up the win, upping his record to 4-4. Ryan Tepera shouldered the loss. St. Louis now has a 5-game losing streak.
The Cardinals had been locked in a 3-3 tie with the Cubs going into the bottom of the eighth inning. That changed quickly when the three-time All-Star Cody Bellinger came to the plate. Bellinger hit a solo home run on a 2-1 fastball from St. Louis hurler Ryan Tepera. It was Bellinger's 16th home run of the year.
Bellinger attributed the win to his team's "hyper resolve."
