Cardinals Sneak By Pirates, 5-4
|
The St. Louis Cardinals took Pittsburgh pitcher Tyler Mahle's best shot and still were able to claim a win at PNC Park. The final score had St. Louis getting past the Pirates, 5-4. Mahle went 6 innings and allowed 1 run, striking out 8. The winner in relief was Jose Alvarez. The left-hander allowed no runs on no hits in 2 innings. He now owns a record of 3-0. The Pirates, now 20-20, have lost 8 in a row.
St. Louis used the timely hitting of Yan Gomes to seize the win. The catcher stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the 11th inning to put the Cardinals on top, 5-4. It was his only hit in 1 at-bat, but it was a game-changer.
In postgame comments, Gomes said he was glad to contribute to an exciting win.
